KATARN COMMANDO UPDATE
Procedure for Dark Forces Level Reviewing:
The first thing you need to do is open a word processing program. Microsoft word is handy, but almost any one will do, so long as it has the ability to handle bullets. Type three headings, DESIGN, DYNAMICS, and EXPERIENCE. Create one bullet under each heading. Now, you need to make sure you\'re ready to take screenshots during the level. If the level has a .BAT, then open that .BAT file in notepad and make sure it reads:
-Dark -ulevelname.gob -shots
-Then run the .BAT.
-If the level does not have a .BAT, then open up your MS DOS prompt. Get to your Dark directory, and then type:
-Dark -ulevelname.gob -shots
Either way, Dark Forces is now launching. You should still have your word processor open, as well. Now you read the briefing and launch the level. And now, you play. And when something catches your eye, follow these steps, in order.
1 - If you really like what you see, holster your gun and remove the status display from the screen, then take a screenshot by hitting the DELETE key.
2 - Hit ESC on your keyboard to open the menu for Dark Forces.
3 - Hold down the ALT key
4 - Hit TAB and continue to hit it until a little rectangle is drawn around the icon for your document.
5 - Type whatever you want under the proper heading.
Keep doing that all through the level, until the end. Now, write your review, using the notes you took. If you took a screenshot anywhere, be sure to talk about it - there\'s a better chance that it will make it into the final review. Here\'s a breakdown of each heading:
INITIAL COMMENTS
In this section, you talk about how you felt about the level before you started it up. \"Well,\" you ask, \"how do I get an opinion before I play the level?\" Well, you could talk about anything you\'ve heard about it, such as \"I\'ve heard this level is a classic\" or, on the other hand, \"I\'ve heard that this level is total crap and I\'d like to know why I have devote the 10 Kb of memory to it.\"
LEVEL DESIGN
This is where you talk about the design of the level. Mostly, you\'re going to discuss architecture here. If, for example, the level is cramped, say so. Talk about things that caught your eye in a good way as well. If there is a texturing masterpiece or calamity, this is also the place to mention it. Be careful not to spend too much time on one thing. Nobody wants to hear about a control panel for ten pages.
LEVEL DYNAMICS
Comments about enemies (number and placement) and weapons, ammo, and power-ups. This section is essentially for things that move, more or less talk about special effects. If there\'s lots of really cool moving stuff, then mention it. If there\'s a distinct lack, then say that too. Discuss realism elements. You can go into item placement a little bit here, but only one direction. For example, if you run out of ammo and have to use your fists, then this is an important dynamics concern.
Mention any new ideas that the author has implemented in the level.
If there was any problem with the level that stopped your enjoyment of the level, then talk about it. The only exception here is \"It doesn\'t run.\" If it crashes at a certain point, then say that, but if you just couldn\'t get it to play, you need to contact someone and try to resolve it, not put it in a review.
LEVEL EXPERIENCE
Comments about overall feeling - enjoyed, hated, or whatever. Comments about atmosphere fit here. Basically, did you feel like you were there? Here it\'s a good idea to discuss lighting and things of that nature as well. And what about music? Did the author find a suitable tune and put it in, or is it that boring Secret Base music? Consider these things very carefully.
5 SIMPLE TIPS:
1. KEEP REVIEWS INDEPENDENT OF ONE ANOTHER. Don\'t compare this level to a different one (\"This was a lot better than \'The Dark Tide II\', because…\")
2. AVOID PERSONAL REFERENCES. Remember, not everyone is in the RS (Hard to believe, I know…), so many review readers are going to be confused when they see \"Honestly, Stalks, can we get a good level? I mean, gee, they\'ve been nothing but crap for about two months now.\"
3. AVOID RECURRING THEMES. If you talked about the revolving door in Lahara Hotel once already, don\'t do it again.
4. KEEP ITEMS CATEGORY-SPECIFIC. Sometimes this can be hard, because you\'re not quite sure where something goes. After all, while enemy placement is part of LEVEL DYNAMICS, it can also be part of LEVEL EXPERIENCE. Use your best judgment.
5. BE CAREFUL NOT TO BE BORING. This is the easy one! All work and no play makes AlexG a dull boy. Have some fun and make the reader smile now and again. It doesn\'t have to be a stand-up comedy routine, but it should be a little better than watching paint dry, too.
6. (YEAH, I KNOW IT SAYS 5 TIPS, BUT THIS IS IMPORTANT): GET YOUR REVIEW IN ON TIME! There\'s a deadline to keep reviews from going on forever. PLEASE be swift and get that review in!
You are now on your way to writing great reviews! Now, get out there and DO IT!
